Abstract

Geographically, location of Bangladesh is vulnerable to earthquake and one of the most earthquake-prone areas in the world which recently has been come to recognize by scientists and stated that it is positioned at the juncture of several active tectonic plate boundaries. Because it is bounded by the regions of high seismicity that include the Himalayan Arc and shillong plateau in the north, the Burmese Arc, ArakanYoma anticlinorium in the east and complex Naga-Disang-Jaflong thrust zones in the northeast. Although Bangladesh is extremely vulnerable to seismic activity, the intensity and nature of this activity is still unexplored. Unfortunately, there is lack of complete earthquake monitoring equipments and resources in Bangladesh. In the year 1954 a seismic observatory was established at Chittagong by the Meteorological Department of Bangladesh which remains the only observatory in the whole country.
